Do you know I just recently learned that new cars don’t just come with cd players anymore.
Well, Little Bean and I will abide no such nonsense. As we set off on our annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage to visit her cousins, I let her sit down and create a cd play list for our trip. Not bad, kid, not bad at all. What do you all think of her choices?
I added the new cd from Dan and Faith Senie and I just got the new cd from Band Maid so that’s in there now as well. Trust me when I say, there ain’t nothin’ on the radio in Central New York.
We’re going to create our own rocking playlist.
It’s an all day trip for us because we plan on making several stops. Among them, a boba tea joint somewhere around Utica, a cheese factory, a place we know that has awesome Korean BBQ wings and a new(ish) Erie Canal rest area.
Traveling with the kid and/or the kid’s mom is never a straight line and I like that about our road adventures. See something out the window? Hey, let’s stop!
We also have some work to do while on the road. Little Bean needs to read over the interview answers from Kat Leon of Holy Wars so we can develop that into an interview story. We’re thinking that the name of that column will either be Interviews With Uma, or Uma Interviews. What do you think?

She’s also VERY determined to do some practice basketball with my nephews, who are sports legends in her mind. Oh, did I mention she made the elementary school basketball team? Yup. Don’t worry, I have a long series of columns coming on that unexpected development!
Anyway, this is our way of telling you that we’re going to be on the move the next few days so, as always, posts will be sporadic, laden with typos and full of the kind of strange and bemusing pit-stops that you can only find at highway truck stops.
You’ll join us, won’t you? Meantime, what’s your ‘can’t do without’ sound track for road trips?
No CD players in cars because no one uses CD as their primary form of music any more. It's Spotify, a Podcast app or other such streaming options.
I tend to go with podcasts these day, personally, but I remember back when I was Uma's age, I had a very unusual play list. See my dad was an over the road truck driver. We didn't have a CD player either, they had not been invented. We also didn't have a cassette deck. We had an 8 track player! And my very first music purchase was made for that 8 track player in the form of Olivia Nuton John's "Physical". And it was purchased with S&H Greenstamps. But my "playlist" if you can call it that was names like CW McCall, Red Sovine, Minnie Perl, Jerry Reed, The Willis Brothers, and Del Reeves. If those names don't mean anything to you, I suggest you grab a box of tissues and search YouTube for "Roses for Mama", "Gidde up go" (and the sequel to learn the outher side of the story), "Little Joe" and Teddy Bear / "Teddy Bear's Last Ride". You will need those tissues, let me tell you.
One cannot do a road trip without the "Hey, let's stop there!". For long trips - books - Anything by Bryson, Lord of the Rings, Narnia.
