And so, on Christmas Eve, we have a little something we want you to think about.
Given Little Bean’s age and her shaky footing when it comes to believing in her Christmas Elf and Santa, I’ve been thinking more lately about ritual. Whatever your beliefs this time of year, odds are you’ve participated in or recall some sort of ritual from your youth, and most likely - perhaps - a ritual that you’ve continued.
Standard across the board rituals like a holiday tree or a menorah are common, of course, but I’ve been thinking about deeper dives.
And a question popped into my head the other day which I think is appropriate for our discussion today, on the day before Christmas. It’s this:
What thing that you loved doing as a kid, do you continue to love doing today? What have you brought with you over the years and decades. Ritual. Food. Feeling. Celebration. I’d like to hear one.
For me, this morning I decided to make grilled cheese sandwiches and that simple act just hit me for some reason - the smell of butter on bread grilling on a stove top, the crusty cheese dripping. Food, obviously, can be a bridge to our past. Sardines. Rye bread. Sponge candy. All tastes from a long time ago that are connected to me more deeply than mere taste.
Plucking the seeds off sunflowers. Digging holes. Reading comic books. Watching planes land. All things I did then, and still try to do.
So, on this day of ritual and connection to our childhood, tell us, what thing did you like as a child that you still like today?
Once you’ve thought of it, we have a follow up suggestion - go do that thing today. Reconnect. Now if you’ll excuse me, I believe we have some sponge candy waiting to be eaten.
Driving around looking at the Christmas lights on Christmas Eve!
Our Christmas Eve Swedish smorgasbord with all the traditional foods, I'm actually hosting tonight for the first time! And then Swedish pancakes for breakfast on Christmas morning. My son still does that with his kids. Makes my heart so happy!
