I was wondering if an event causes a memory that makes you like or dislike something, or are like and dislikes from your great uncles DNA? When I was about 6, I stepped into a lake and my foot landed on a pile of worms (how they got there who knows). I remember it. I do not like worms at all. Did this dislike come from that event?

Childhood trauma often leads to phobias later in life! I'm convinced my fear of bees and wasps stems from a wasp landing on my belly when I was a little kid hanging out in my grandmas back yard! Stepping on a pile of worms though, yike!

Even worse - when I was about 10 my dad found a young Robin not doing so well so we were going to try and feed it. My dad was on the other side of the fence and said hold out your hands. He filled it with worms. Talk about trauma.

I think all childhood memories for the most part are good...there's bound to be bad ones as well. Sometimes the bad outweigh the good in retrospect. My earliest memory: I was 5 sitting on my grandfather's big roll top desk, looking through the tiny drawers the desk had and finding the money (coins) he had hidden. That was a very big deal for me!!

Such a small moment and memory and yet it stuck with you!

You should watch "Inside-Out", if you haven't already, maybe with Little Bean. I think you could have an interesting discussion about it afterwards. There's a sequel coming out this summer, too.

I saw it and liked it when it came out but I don't think she's seen it yet!

My first memory was of my grandmother in a black and white swimsuit carrying a pool float. She lived next door and was going to take my cousin swimming. I really wanted to go too but my mother said no. I thought if I could only run and catch up, gram would take me too, so I started to run to her and stepped on a bee. It stung me on my big toe. I remember my mother holding me over the sink and running cold water on my foot and reminding me that I should have listened to her. I have no photos of this but it is very clear to me even though I was only about 2 years old. Maybe because it was traumatic at the time.

Unfortunately those little traumas tend to stick with us :(
