Ah, the days of thrills over safety. I was fortunate, or unfortunate, to have experienced the tail end of that. Having been to the Florida State Fair in the early 70's, with the thrill shows, the "girlie" shows, and the side shows, it was just the way it was, even though some of it was sad.. Of course, growing up in the 50's, just keying on those metal skates (that would always come off) flying down hill, and jumping through a hula hoop, was our version of the thrill show. No helmet, no body pads, etc, and I am sure some did try the fire thing.
I took my skates apart and nailed the wheels on a 2 by 4 and made a skateboard, or what I thought was a skateboard. I might as well jumped through a ring of fire. LOL.
