Somewhere I have a book of Beatles music that I spent a lot of time with at my piano as a kid. Never did get good at most of the songs, but it was fun to try! Give her a couple of years to see how she’s doing with the piano, and then get it for her.
What I didn't write in the piece was that she also tried a Beatles songbook because she thought it would be easier. Haha! She learned how complex and detailed the Beatles actually are :)
I can remember being in highschool wanting to play the song Beth by the band Kiss with an older friend (mid 20's) who played piano. I had carefully been practicing the chords, but if you know the song it is mostly piano. Unlike most music by Kiss, this one is a bitter-sweet ballad about the lonely life of a musicians spouse who put the music before the relationship. It is nothing like what you expect from Kiss and I wanted to play it with my friend because I'd heard him play. So I gave him the music and asked him if we could play it and maybe record it. He said yes and I asked when would be a good time. "How about right now?" he asked. I was stunned but said sure. He sight read the music and it was PERFECT. After weeks of practice, he was better than my clumsy attempts on his first reading. I was truely humbled.
I asked him how long he'd been playing and he had been in lessons from about 6 to 18 and had kept up with his music in the intervening years. I can promise you this, at 8 he could not have done what he did at 25 (ish, I don't know for sure). And while she may be limited to "Pop Goes the Weasel" right now, in 10-20 years, if she puts in the effort, she'll be able to play Bohemian Rapsody to make Queen weep with joy.
Thank you, and thank you for that story! I always like KISS as a concert when I was a kid, but never was wild about their music. Except Beth. I loved and still love that song.
Bohemian Rhapsody! My absolute favorite of ALL TIME! My granddaughters can't play the piano, but their dance team sure did a fabulous competition to it!
The fact that she's into music at her age is a good sign. We always had something playing in our house, mostly rock. Wife had an old Rogers drum kit and son started on those preteen...went on to play in his own band in college and after. They are never too young...

Love this! When my son started playing piano he was obsessed with Smoke on the Water! I love that she had no fear to try it - she'll get there.

BTW, I'd love to Jam with Uma some time. Unfortunately I don't have a piano in my music studio (yet). But if I get one I'll let you know.

This post made me smile.

You going to see Thunderstruck next month JIm?
No, going to a show in Concord called "Rock Orchestra". I like the combination of music styles like that. I'll catch up with you eventually.
Awww too bad, the girls are looking forward to a return. This time we got front table seats!
The fact that she even tried to play Bohemian Rhapsody is outstanding.
