Last month, Little Bean and I asked you all to take a look at two huge unnamed boulders near the summit of Kane Mountain in the Adirondacks and help us name them. And boy did you all bring the heat!
I’ve been tagging fire towers all this year for a Falcon Guides hiking guide coming out next year and up near the summit of this lovely 2,100 foot mountain, I discovered these two big boys right near the trail. Since I’m always looking for markers to tag along the way as I GPS the route, I figured it was time the rocks had names.
Here’s how we did this. I took all your suggestions and wrote the names down next to a picture of the rocks for Little Bean. Just the rock names, not your names so she had no idea who suggested them. Then she picked out three from each list, one winner and two runner ups.
The winners will become the permanent names of these two, and I’ll even mention the namers in the guide. Boom, instant fame!
And so, let’s begin with where the rocks are located. The map below shows the hiking route and I’ve circled the spot along the trail where the rocks are located.
Now, let’s get to the names. Coming down off the summit and heading north, the first rock you come to is this big boy and you all had some great ideas about what to call him.
The runners up for this big boy are: QUAGSIRE suggested by Kathleen Willette and GRIM by Charity. Thank you both so much!
And now, the winning name of the first rock is….. drum roll….
THE READER suggested by Barbara McLaughlin! Little Bean loved the idea of a giant sitting along the trail reading a book. She wants to know what you all think the giant is reading?
And now on to the second boulder. This one is slightly smaller and flatter and is located about twenty feet away from The Reader.
The runners up for this rock are: GRUMPY OLD MAN suggested by Erin C. and NINJA suggested by Diane Kane. Thank you both so much!
And now, the winning name of the second rock is… drum roll please…
COMET suggested by Marianne O’Connor! Little Bean commented that she needed to figure out which direction the Comet was heading.
Congratulations to Barbara and Marianne, your names will now go down through all eternity as the names for these monsters. Perhaps someday, you’ll like to visit the boulders yourselves. Thank you so much to everyone who suggested names like Sly Lizard, The Owl, Barney, Mr. Magoo and MY personal favorite, Ginormous Gloomy Gus!
Here’s a pic of Little Bean during the selection process. We appreciate all your comments and attention. On we go to tomorrow, our final day of this November daily marathon.
All the choices were great!
Woohoo! I guess I can't say I never win anything anymore, can I? I think he/she is reading Glam Rock by Alwyn Turner. ;-) I just picked that from a list of books that reference Rock/Rocks, and it tickles me to think that the rock giant is imagining being Ziggy Stardust...
