Well, the kid’s basketball team won one! And it was a nail biter, 8-7.
To recap for you all - and don’t tell her I said this - their team has just been, well, terrible. They haven’t just been losing, they’ve been losing by enormous amounts.
I’m not sure what happened this past weekend, but they pulled it together, playing a team not that much better than them and knowing, maybe, this was their last chance. You see, for their final game next week, they’ll play the undefeated, best team in the league.
This was sort of their last chance. Tied after regular time, tied after the 2 minute extra period, the game went into a shoot out and they nailed it.
I’m not going to spend much time talking about the actual game, except to say Little Bean worked hard and played more aggressively than I’d seen her before. After, the coach at the spur of the moment, took any team member who could make it out to Dairy Queen for ice cream. Nine kids went! It was a good gesture.
Anyway, what I did want to mention was that I kind of - sort of - get it now, this parents in the bleachers thing. I was sitting next to the dad of one of Little Bean’s friends, who is also the team captain, and seeing them so close and fighting so hard, it was impossible to not go crazy. We yelled and cheered and high-fived, two dads sitting up there in the risers having heart attacks watching their daughters’ (very awful) team finally win one. I think we may even have hugged at some point.
I wanted them to win so badly, just one, just one game. This felt redemptive somehow, like it’s been worth the whole season and the car rides and practices. Yes, ok, this is about me I guess. I just wanted her to feel that - to work so hard, and sweat and be sore and out of breath and to just… win one. And they did.
Listen, these are elementary school kids. It’s not the WBA, there’s nothing on the line here, no scholarships or college scouts in the audience. None of that. Just a bunch of girls having fun. Right? That’s what it’s supposed to be, right?
But still… they won one. She won one. It feels like she won it all.
