On Jan. 27, 1991, myself and a bunch of Buffalo Bills loving buddies sat in a living room watching kicker Scott Norwood line up for what we all assumed would be the Superbowl game winning kick.
We held hands. Yup, we did. Just a bunch of Bills fans desperate for our team to win something, anything.
Well everybody on the planet knows how that went. Wide right. The Bills lost the first of four (yes, four) Superbowls in a row and in retrospect, it feels like that’s the period when I stopped taking professional sports seriously anymore.
Loss after loss. Putting so much time and mental energy into football or hockey. I dunno, it’s hard to put a finger on it. I just… stopped. Sure, I still casually watch a game here or there. And it was kinda fun to be so universally hated during the Patriots reign. But I just don’t have the energy or interest so much anymore.
And the Superbowl? Meh. Puppy Bowl is cool. And Prince’s halftime show was the greatest in history. And sure, we’ll get together at a friend’s to watch. Why not?
But here’s where I’m going with this, and it may surprise you what I’m about to say.
Have a great day today! If you love football, go nuts! People like sports, like REALLY like sports. They like football like I like music. And yay to them!
You’re going to see a lot of stuff on social media today about no one caring about the Superbowl. Ignore that. You know why? I’ll tell you.
Have grace, and let people like what they like. Just let them. Maybe even be happy for this thing that they enjoy. Maybe be happy that they are happy.
That’s it. That’s all I have for you today. If you love football, or Superbowl commericals, or whomever is the halftime performer (I really don’t know) or just are looking forward to hanging out with a bunch of buds, then hey, go do that and have a nice time.
If not, then have a nice day anyway, and be mellow in the shadow of so many others having a great time. Cool? Cool!
Now go get the wings a’fryin and the nachos a’nachoin and we’ll see ya in the morning.
Special note: We’re working on what we hope is a pretty special and surprise story for tomorrow. Stay tuned!
We used to go to a Super Bowl party at a cousin’s house every year. Everyone would chatter and eat during the game, and then we would all focus on the TV during the ads. Yep, basically an ads-watching party! Then the Pats made it into the Super Bowl, and they canceled the party because they thought folks might actually care about the game. 😄
Yes! If everyone could just let everyone like what they like....the world would be a better place.
