Where Are We? What's Happened?
Let's Look Back on Some Past Stories and See What's Going On (Day 80)
With nearly 200 essays at Day By Day and hundreds of followers now, it occurred to me to maybe do a quick follow up to some past stories and see where we are. So, I’ll link the story, then follow with an update or update links.
Ready? Here we go!
A Tale of Two Thermoses: The Stanley Cup thermos fad continues to rage on. Remember how a few weeks ago I wrote that this was a lifestyle fad in status signalling for woman? Well, that idea is now being written about. Here’s a story from Salon: Why White Girls Love Stanley Cups
There’s So Much: Remember, when Little Bean suggested I write about Pokemon because card trading was banned at school? Turns out that’s really a thing all across the world. Pokemon has been giving kids fits for decades. Here’s a story on that: A Brief History of Pokemon Getting Banned. I’m going to do a follow up on all this soon as Little Bean has bucked the system by building a Pokemon pop up book in art class.
Return to the Lost Ketchup: Remember how there was a ketchup factory in Hooksett and how were were trying to find the original recipe so we could make out own homemade ketchup? Well, we STILL haven’t found that original recipe. Come on NH historians and ketchup lovers, how hard could this be? Here’s a story about the Burbanks, help us find that recipe! The Warning, Part 2: The day we met our favorite band has been the most popular post of Day By Day in the 15 months and 187 essays that we’ve been writing for this community! We’re excited to report that the band has a new album coming out in 2024 along with (we hope) a new tour in the states. Little Bean has informed me that we’ll be hitting the road this year for several of their shows. In other words, we’re going to be groupies. I’m pretty ok with that. In case you don’t know who The Warning is, here’s a link to one of Little Bean’s favorite songs, Animosity.
Big Announcement Day: Way back in May, I announced that I signed on to Falcon Guides to write a field guide to NYS Fire Towers, and spent most of last summer and fall researching that. So, where are we? Well, much of the initial research and visits are done. Starting in April, I’ll have two solid months to finish up the remaining towers (including going all the way back to Western New York) in preparation of a due date in June. With luck, the actually book will be out in spring/summer 2025! Until then, look at this! My bio is up at Falcon Guides, it’s really happening! NYS Fire Towers
That’s it for now! Are there any stories you remember that you’d like updates on? Some stories you’ll see right here in the upcoming week will include a report from a craft swap, an update on our second rocks field guide, something or other about the primary election (blah, blah) and also, Little Bean and I will go in search of Mr. Milott’s Dead Cow. You won’t want to miss a single word!
