Watermelon and sushi.
I don’t have a story, exactly, today, but rather I just really like how those words sound together and the image they create in your mind’s eye.
After coming back from a trip to the grocery store, Little Bean was looking for snacks and happened to be walking by as I was unpacking.
“Oh! Watermelon and sushi, daddy!”
And so we did. Her mother was in a work meeting downstairs so we made sure to make a small plate for her. They I chopped the watermelon in chunks, including a triangle-shaped piece for her and we separated the sushi out into plates - it was her favorite kind, onion crumbles with spicy sauce over California rolls.
We topped it all off by splitting a pomegranate seltzer.
And then we feasted, my daughter and I. That’s good living right there - watermelon and sushi with loved ones in a warm kitchen on a fall night.
Later, we discovered that watermelon sushi (not two separate foods) was actually a thing, made primarily for vegans. That actually sounds pretty tasty as well.
This all reminded me of a restaurant Little Bean and I ate at in Nashville called the Fun Time Ramen Bar. It was the only restaurant she’d ever been to that had every one of her top five favorite foods on the menu - Ramen, Sushi, Boba, Korean BB-Wings and Pizza. That meal was heavenly.
Anyway, I digress. Watermelon and sushi. As the season spirals into winter and days get shorter, we’re looking more frequently for connection and bonding at home, in little everyday moments and sharing food we like around the kitchen island is a welcome past-time.

The ultimate comfort food for me is ice cream with chunks of other sweet stuff in it.
Slow cooker turkey kielbasa, cannoli bean, kale soup with corn bread.
