Update From Just South of Canada
My Attempts to Write Every Day During This Journey Fall Completely Apart!
Friends, I write to you after two days of adventure in the hazy, misty, mud-soaked, Canadian forest fire cloaked glorious Adirondacks. I’ll be here all week folks, just mention my name at the bar for ten cent wings!
I’m using this week to hike to and get the basic trail tracking down for the majority of Northern NY towers that will appear in my upcoming Falcon Guides field guide. My foolish goal was to write to you every day. Alas, not going to happen! But I will at least keep our Tuesday morning post going and send you some pics.
Some quick thoughts thus far in no particular order:
Besides my week atop Mount Washington, this is only the second time I’ve been away from the girls for a whole week and ugh, I really miss them. At her age, it feels like a week is enough time to miss something epic and important. I’ve been texting her pics (yes, that’s a thing she does now) and we’re planning on a big Daddy/Daughter trip out here in August.
It’s been a while (pre-pandemic) since I hiked a signifcant mountain. Hurricane Mountain is nearly 4,000 feet and 8 miles round trip. My hiking legs are just gone!
There is only one communal dryer in the hotel and I can’t get any of my clothes dry. They do, however, have an automatic pancake maker. Just put your plate under, push a button and BAM, two pancakes. We live in extraordinary times!
The front desk clerk is named Erle and for heaven’s sake he has a mullet. He told me of a wine tasting cafe nearby. But when I explained to him that I don’t drink, he said, “Oh ok, well there’s also a really good beer bar just up the street.”
I’ve never hiked in the Adirondacks. They are rugged and open and beautiful. I’m going to be exhausted by the time I get home.
Oh, and I almost forget. Have a nice holiday. Focus on keeping all your fingers.
That’s it for now. Here’s a couple random pics for you. If you’ve hiked in the Adirondacks or know of a good Chinese take out in the northern part of the park, please let me know. Onward!
If... no WHEN I can make the time, I'd love to do the NY 4K hiking list. Since I do the 48 climbs fundraiser every year, it just seems fitting. But right now I've set my sights on the NH 4K. If the weather on the presidentials cooperates for my single day presi traverse, I should finish this month!
