TWO GRINCHES
We walk past the house, you know the one,
The one with not one but two Grinches, the Grinch twins
Stealing the tree and powering up the sled
The dog has no opinion of the Grinches.
We cross over five corners, jay walk it,
Under the single lamp, the dreary, warm night
Hissing on the pavement, the line between
Ice and water a blur.
The evening is cold wet, wet cold,
Like a Rust Belt lake effect,
Like an Erie Rambler coming up
The neighborhood sidewalk.
We walk along the granite wall,
Then the little patchy spots of grass
White from frost. Then down the little hill
And regain the sidewalk.
My hands feel like stone,
At the Little Library I offer the pup
A treat but he just looks at my hand, like
Why are we still out here?
But the night is clear, so at the very least
We have the shimmering moon and is that
Maybe Jupiter, but now we’re home
At least there were no drones.
