Start writing about Pokemon, she says.
Writing what though? I ask. What about it?
Just, about it, she says, that’s what you do. There’s so much.
I had asked my daughter to tell me what to write about today and she didn’t hesitate. Over the years, she’s had a hot and cold relationship with Pokemon. She collected a little. She watched. She played. Then, for a time, the cards collected dust.
But something happened this year. Kids started trading during playground time. It became a thing again. It became such a thing that her school banned Pokemon trading because it was becoming disruptive.
Can you imagine that? Pokemon is banned at her school. Topic for another time I guess. Besides, kids have a way of keeping on with something they like.
So here we are. She can see I still don’t understand.
Write about Eevee, she says.
Who?
Little Bean comes over and sits down next to me. I give her my phone and she brings up Eevee, a popular and powerful Evolution Pokemon that first manifests as what appears to be a sort of brown fox with enormous ears.
Here’s the thing, Little Bean is saying, she can evolve into all sorts of creatures, eight total.
Fans call Eevee’s evolutions, Eeveelutions.
I like this one, my daughter says, and shows me Vaporeon, Eevee’s water evolution, sort of a cute lizard/fox with a mermaid tail. I can draw this one, she says.
Show me, I say.
So she gets to work, and I sit back there on a sofa with my daughter and she creates Water Eevee.
Will you write about Pokemon now? she asks.
I nod. But really, I know I’ll be writing about spending the evening drawing with my daughter.
