I should have known this would happen but I’m always startled by how personable Little Bean can be. People are drawn to her. This has something to do, I’m sure, with the fact that she’s still a kid. But she also has an energy that’s… I don’t know… just different.
When we arrived at the entrance outside Brighton Music Hall, the waiting line was already quite long so we took our place in the back and waited for the Meet and Greet callers to come. We saw our good bud Jay in line and folks in front and behind us commented on Little Bean’s MORE Box that she had built to give to the band as a gift.
The band’s fan base is well known (at least in theory to me because I’d never experienced a live show) as being kid and family friendly, despite the fact that this was loud, shred your face rock. Little did we know then how true that would be.
About an hour before the general admission doors opened, venue workers came out and starting pulling folks off the general line who had Meet and Greet passes. They checked my passes and ID and then ushered us off the line and told us to go down to the doors where the VIP line was forming. That meant we had to walk past all the GA folks in front of us.
That’s when I realized this was going to be different from all the other shows I’d been to.
Someone shouted as we walked past, “Awesome MORE Box!” Another person called out, “That’s really nice!”
And now there were little pockets cheering my daughter as she walked past. She held up the box (because she’s a ham) and there was more laughter and some people even applauded. One guy reached out to fist bump me. “Way to go dad,” he said.
After all the commotion, we finally made it to the VIP line where we were greeted by a YouTube music reactor who wanted to interview Little Bean about the box.
This was a lot to take in and the doors hadn’t even opened!
“Daddy,” she said, “people like this box, huh?”
“I think it’s more special because you made it,” I said. And that’s true. For the past few days I had tried to give her advice and suggestions, but she didn’t want to hear it. She insisted that plans for the box were “all in my head” and that was that.
“Do you think the band gets a lot of boxes?” she asked.
“I don’t know, baby.”
“Hmmm…” She had that far-away look in her eye that usually means trouble, but before I could ask, the line started moving.
It was time. After all these months, we were going to meet the band and present them with her gift.
Tomorrow: Little Bean throws all the questions she had prepared to ask the band out the window and decides on a new, last second approach. Also, we scope out the venue and discover some new friends.
The Warning Chronicles will be a series of short episodes detailing our trip to see The Warning at Brighton Music Hall in Boston and meeting the band. First, go give some love to the band, link here: The Warning. Little Bean and I had been preparing for this day for months and we thought it would be fun to give our readers and music fans a little taste of the wonderful, chaotic, unexpected day we experienced. Hope you all enjoy!

There's an aura around little kids at a concert. A lot of folks are thinking it could be the kid's first show and from a parent's point of view delighted that you are making lifetime memories she will never forget.
It was such a privilege to meet you and your little girl at the show. I really hope we get to do this all over again. You are a great dad!!
