Little Bean has a way of stumbling into good fortune without even trying.
We were just about five minutes on the streets of Portland, just having left the car in the parking garage and making our way to the House of Music, when we turned a corner and nearly ran straight into the band.
Three of the four members of Plush were out for a walk. Just walking down the street like normal people. And of course my daughter ran right up to them.
“Hi!” she said.
And so began our day of music and adventure. Since discovering this band through our mutual love of The Warning, another all female rock band, Little Bean has taken to these four young rockers. Faith, the drummer, is still a teenager.
We’ve been waiting for this day for months. We decided to save our pennies and get VIP tickets which would get us a meet and greet, and a private song. She made them gifts. She barely slept last night.
But all that went out the window as she nearly threw herself into their arms. When faced with a little kid fan right out on the street, things could have gone two ways - they could have politely explained they had to go get set up and they’d see her at the show and no one would blame them.
Or, they could all stop and absolutely shower her with attention, and to their very great credit, that’s what they did. They asked her for her name, took her seriously and asked her if she played music. She pulled out the charm bracelets she made for them and they patiently waited as she handed them out. Ashley, the bass player, even commented that they matched her outfit. After, they posed for a picture with her. They didn’t hurry off. They let her finish the interaction.
This all happened before anything, before we even got to the venue.
I mean yes, I know, I know, fan service is shrewd marketing. Irritating or disrespecting fans, especially little kids, for any artist regardless of your art, will come back to haunt you. But this was above and beyond. This was approaching that core memory territory where if that’s the ONLY thing that happened to us that day, it would still have been worth the trip.
But it was far from the only amazing moment of that day, as were about to discover.
Join us tomorrow for Part 2!
