Back in late 2020 and 2021, after the early months of the Covid panic, but before she would head to first grade, Little Bean and I embarked on our NH Fire Tower Patch Quest. This would have made her 6-7 when she did those hikes.
That quest would make up the primary chapters of a NH Fire Tower history and memoir called Where There’s Smoke: On the Trail to New Hampshire’s Fire Towers.
All of that is written, some 85 pages worth. Covid set the project back, the publisher went out of business and our Rocks Field Guides took priority.
But I have all that writing. And more! There’s bits and pieces finished, including the history of Smokey Bear, a history of NH Fire Tower Lookouts during 9/11 and a bit about the famous fire tower women of World War 2.
I want to bring that writing to an audience and I’m going to do that here once we reach 600 subscribers.
I’ll present a weekly chapter, I think on Wednesdays. A lot has changed since we did it - fire towers being replaced and such, but it was such a wonderful quest and we’re still asked often about it.
So no more waiting. You all will be the first to read these rarities, in their whole state, with photos and some background attached.
To that end, help me get the word out to hiking or fire tower friends or family you may know that could have an interest. Shoot some links over to any social media groups you may know. Let’s drum up a solid base for this and then we’ll begin.
There will be 15 chapters for sure, plus an intro and a whole bunch of the smaller essays and history - so let’s say we’d do this for 20 Wednesdays. And at the end, I’ll gather the whole thing into a PDF and make that available for free, once again to only subscribers here first.
What do you say? I hate to see finished writing go unpublished and I thought it might be fun to give you all something special. Can you help me find 2 dozen new subscribers so we can begin!?
