Over the course of two days, Little Bean and I jumped head first into the incredible world of the NH Ren Faire, and the experience provided her with a living, creative community that not just welcomed her, but encouraged her costume designing and imagination. She found a tribe to call her own.
So today, instead of a long essay, we’ll present a slide show from the two days, AND a special poem written by our dear friend Ed Pacht. Ed, as many of you know, is (as far as I’m concerned) the official poet of this little community space. He’s a former Rochester Poet Laureate and he’s a personal inspiration because he’s written a poem a day for, literally, decades. He’s good people, as the saying goes.
His character at the Ren Faire is Brother Sylvan, a wandering, poet monk who does readings and meet and greets. He met up with the girls, who were dressed as Mushroom Cats, and composed this poem in their honor!
Sylvan and the Mushroom Cats
Sylvan wanders o’er the grounds on a sunny day
as he goes to those he meets all along the way,
and lo he’s passing by the gate
to look for friends arriving late
when mushroom cats come bounding in
and he greets them with a grin
and reads to them words he has written
as before him they are sittin’.
Ah, the pleasures of the Faire,
When such folk are well met there!

So glad Bean and her friend were able to meet so many like-minded folk at the faire! I noticed that except for one or two, the fur-poeple all, had their hands clenched: claws retracted, they were friendly!
And a good time was had by all!
