There was a bit of a musical shift for us last week, as the Brooklyn-based Bhangra/Jazz band, Red Baraat, came to Concord and we went out to give ourselves a healthy dose of world fusion music. Sousaphones and saxophones and trumpets, oh my!
After seeing the jam band One Time Weekend in February, Little Bean couldn’t stop talking about the dueling percussionists, in particular Alex Giosa, who played bongos and chimes. In fact, she asked him a couple questions in particular in the interview we did with them, which you can read here: One Time Weekend interview
Anyway, she’s seemed hungry for a wider variety of live musical sounds, so Red Baraat was going to fit that bill.
Here’s our short YouTube Vlog about the show. While you’re there, be sure to subscriber to our channel, Dispatches From the Rail.
Led by dhol (stand up drums) player Sunny Jain, the large band blends Indo jazz with traditional Bhangra into a high energy fusion of dance pop and call and response jam pop. For the show at the Capital Center of the Arts, the band consisted of seven players.
Of course, because she’s an expert at such things now, Little Bean tucked herself right up front, first in front of the stage. She’s getting more patient now, too, willing to wait for longer periods of time to get those front stage views!
What followed was a joyous mix of acid jazz and heavy percussion, which each player getting a chance to shine. They even pulled three people out of the audience to have a Bhangra dance contest.
After, most members of the band came out for a meet and greet, and we bought the lady of the house a t-shirt for coming out with us. The band signed Little Bean’s music autograph book and she even got a set list! Her collection of show swag is growing!
As her musical taste expands, we’ll keep our eyes open for more music like Red Baraat. For now, though, we need to begin preparing - three weeks until AC/DC!
Wow! I looked up Red Baraat and they have 4 albums and a just-released single! I'll be jamming to their music this weekend!
