There’s this enormous, old tree on my daily, evening dog walk that we always pass by. The bark of the tree is beginning to shred and every time I walk by I have to physically contain myself to not just start peeling the flapping bark.
As some dog owners know I’m sure, when you basically walk the same route every day, you look for the little things to occupy your mind, and this tree has become an old friend.
But last night, something new. An owl. Someone had put an owl in the tree. Or, maybe that owl had been there a long time, but the peeling bark had distracted me so much that I hadn’t noticed. That owl was looking at me the whole time, I bet. No wonder I didn’t peel that tree.
The dog, meantime, care neither about the owl or the bark. Either way, we moved on, but now it felt like a whole new neighborhood where I had never been before. Who knew what other owls were waiting for me?
There are owls looking over your shoulder all the time, count on it. Try to see them, yeah? I bet we’ll be surprised by how many we find.
Housekeeping: Happy weekend everyone. As you read this, perhaps we’re in the middle of a snowstorm, likely the last of the year. Go on out in it, it’s ok. It’ll be gone tomorrow.
Looking ahead, we have some interesting things planned. Tomorrow, we’ll talk a little bit about the brand new Patch Quest for the second Rocks That Rock Field Guide. We already have our first completer! Little Bean will model the patches for you!
There are some fun music-related posts ahead, including an announcement about a project Little Bean and I are working on where she’s going to get to interview an up-and-coming band her and I have started following.
Next week I’ll head back to New York to start finishing off my hikes for the upcoming fire tower book, so some sort of shenanigans will no doubt come out of that.
And as I’m sure you all are aware, we have a big eclipse heading our way! Are you going anywhere to experience the eclipse?
As always, thanks for following along and HELLO to our new subscribers, I’m so glad you’re here! Have a look around and stay a while!
I hear barred owls a few times a week now at night. Sometimes there are a few "talking" to each other. It is nesting time. "Who cooks for you,? Who cooks for you all?"
