Today marks the one year anniversary of Interviews By Uma, the semi-occasional feature we run where Little Bean (sometimes along with yours truly) interviews musicians and artists.
This is one year because it was on May 22, 2024 that her first interview, with Canadian hard rock band Freeze the Fall, dropped right here at Day By Day. The response was so positive that she wanted to do more, and so her and I began to develop the series.
Since that first interview she’s done a total of seven: Freeze the Fall, Ashley Suppa of Plush, Kat Leon and Johnny Tuosto of Holy Wars, One Time Weekend, Composer Wendy Stevens and Folk Singers Dan and Faith Senie. (I contributed some questions in a couple cases.)
In a future post, I want to talk a bit about our process. We’re often asked how we manage to line up the artists or decide who she wants to interview and how a ten-year-old is able to get through such things. We find it to be really fun and interesting so we’ll write about that at some point.
For now, a surprise to celebrate one year of interviewing! The extraordinary musicians that make up Freeze the Fall - Quinn, Aria and Jonah - agreed to answer one big question from Uma. It’s a question that Little Bean and I were talking about this week and she thought it would be interesting to ask them as well.
The question?
HOW HAVE YOUR LIVES CHANGED IN THE PAST YEAR?
Freeze the Fall: Hi Uma! Thank you so much for reaching out. You wanted to know what the last year has been like and how it might've changed us?
Honestly, the last year has been truly overwhelming and so exciting. So many dreams have come true for us. It's hard to believe that not only did we drop our first EP in the last year, but we're right on the verge of dropping our second EP!
We have had the opportunity to play alongside some very cool bands and in various places around our province, with even bigger and more exciting gigs on the horizon.
We had the opportunity to make our first story driven music videos and we saw our music come to life on vinyl! We have grown in our music, writing abilities, our performance abilities, and just overall as human beings.
This really has been a transformational year, probably the most exciting part has been simply knowing that our music is making its way out into the world, and that fans are connecting with us. Honestly, that means more than anything!

We urge you to go and check out the band at their website, sign up to their socials and generally give them support. Three teenagers that talented and working that hard ought to be rewarded! Here’s a link: Freeze the Fall Website
Some of the amazing accolades the band has earned in the last year include being featured in some of rock and metal’s most notable publications, they won a “One’s to Watch” national songwriting competition and signed to Canada’s largest indie record label. That’s one heck of a year!
(Big thanks to Freeze the Fall Momager Ginny Becker for being there for Little Bean, keeping us in the loop and in contact with the band! You’re the best!)
Big Day Tomorrow: We continue the Interviews By Uma celebration tomorrow, Friday May 22, with an exclusive follow up interview with Kat Leon of Holy Wars about the band’s brand new single “I Feel Everything.” The single drops tomorrow and amazingly Kat chatted with Uma about what the song means and the making of the official music video. Stay tuned for that! What a week it’s been! Also, if you like what we do here, you can help keep us awake with caffeine or sugar at this link: BUY US A COFFEE OR SMOOTHIE!
Nice!! The future is looking bright for these youngsters, including Uma. 🤘
I couldn't think of better role models for a young music fan than these three.
