Notes From the Library: Press the Button and See What Happens
Our Annual Springtime Finger Crossing
Our little rural library has… character.
Yeah, that’s it. I’m going to go with character.
When you work in a 130-year-old building, character usually means things fall apart all the time. And so, as the tempertures have risen lately, so too has our anxiety in dusting off our beautiful old building, airing it out, and bringing it in line with the summer season. Will the windows open? Do the doors stick? How’s that foundation looking? Skunks under the kids’ room? What’s the emotional state of that beaver across the street?
And most importantly, what will happen when we turn on the air conditioning?
Last summer, our compressor blew after a bees nest was discovered INSIDE the HVAC. This year, why anything could happen!
So the ritual began. We made sure the building was empty of patrons. (Remember, virtually anything was possible!) The staff stepped back a decent distance from our wall units.
And we pressed the button and held our breath! After a moment, the vents popped down and cool air began to blow. Success! High fives all around!
This year, this season at least, our library would be comfortable. Still, I’m keeping an eye on that beaver.
Just read a notice hunting for summer preachers for a church I pastored for ten years in Madbury. They suggest it was a "boutique church" and that was language for "small."
