It all began with a question from Little Bean. After a random hike to New Boston’s Frog Rock in early 2021, she was so impressed, on the trail back she asked, “Daddy, are there any more rocks in New Hampshire named after animals?”
Boy, are there!
Later that day, I posted the picture below of us with the caption, Maybe we ought to write a field guide to famous New Hampshire rocks!
A few months later, it became official. Little Bean and I launched NH Rocks That Rocks, an adventure guide to 25 Famous Rocks and Boulders in New Hampshire.
And as promised yesterday, our new field guide, More NH Rocks That Rock: Memorial Stones has a launch date! The book will be heading out this weekend to those that pre-ordered and we hope to have hard copies of the book available to anyone by Monday, Feb. 19th!
Little Bean and I are so excited and proud of Volume 2 and we think you’ll love its mix of adventure and history.
If you’ve already pre-ordered or if you pre-order before this weekend, your book will be signed by myself and Little Bean and my daughter will even draw you a unique, one-of-a-kind picture inside the book!
So here’s the link for you to do that! Pre-Order Rocks That Rock Memorial Stones
Here’s a link for Volume One of the Set: NH Rocks That Rock 25
As with the first book, there will be a Patch Quest and Completion Certificate which we’ll unveil sometime next week. The best way to begin earning those is to join our Facebook Rocks Community. Here’s a link for you to do that: Facebook Rocks That Rock
We can’t wait to get out there and start promoting the new book and hearing what you all think of the wonderful Memorial Stone locations. And then it’s right back to work on Volume 3 (Rock Oddities) and Volume 4 (Tombstones). And hint hint, it looks like there might even be a volume five! Stay tuned for that.
Finally, we had a big subscriber drive the last week or so and many of you are new to this lovely community at Day By Day. First, thank you for giving us a chance. We try to offer up a little daily reminder - music, books, libraries, parenting, history and yes, many, many rocks - that life is good, a short and sweet way to begin your day. We’re thrilled to have you!
Day By Day is free, though opportunities abound to buy me a cup of coffee and Little Bean a juice box! All the archives (all 200 plus essays) are available. Have a look around, give us suggestions. We want to hear from you!
Meantime, we’re going to focus a bit over the next few days on the new book and rocks and stones and boulders, well, you get the idea.
So for now, tell us your rock story. And don’t say you don’t have one. EVERYONE has a rock story. On we go!
My first rock story is about a small, flat rock to the right of my driveway. When I was in elementary school, I used to stand on that rock and wait for the bus (which came down the side street and picked me up there, instead of at the foot of the driveway). Several years later, a little round plaque of sorts was cemented into that rock by some surveyors with a date and my grandparents' name (because they owned the property at the time). I don't know what the plaque's purpose was/is or whether it's still used.
