We took a walk down to Oak Park in Manchester the other day after seeing some construction vehicles in the vicinity. We wanted to check on Nessie’s Humps, the series of protruding boulders in the north western corner of the park that is one of the stops in our NH Rocks That Rock field guide.
And boy is there quite a bit going on! It doesn’t appear that the Nessie’s Humps area will be affected, but the entire paved path system in the part has been dug up. The path is like a big X through the park from each of the corners of the square. The pathways are all gone, leaving long dirt ditches. Our Ward Alderman Danny Goonan tells me they’ll be repaving.
Also, the center pavilion has been removed. We wouldn’t be sorry if that didn’t come back as it had begun to look a little rough with graffiti and trash. Leaving that center core open might actually be a nice improvement.
The family and Pip the Wonder Dog walked on down and we checked out the rock area. Nessie Rocks is named after the local legend of sightings of the creature that was supposedly living in what used to be a quarry where the park is today! The set of three rocks up on a little rise reminded Little Bean of the humps of the famous monster.
The area does have a bit of trash around it, but we didn’t have any bags on that particular hike. After the park renovation is complete, we’ll head back over with bags and gloves and do a clean up if one is still needed.
If you find yourself down Manchester way, stop by the park. Check out the huge split oak and the spider web playground equipment while you’re hear. We recommend approaching the rocks from the northern side of the park to avoid the construction. Tag Nessie’s Humps and add them onto your Rock That Rock Patch Quest Completion List. And if you’d like to know more about the rocks quest, check out our book store or visit our FB Community page at FB Rocks That Rock.
