Mine and Little Bean’s concert season is beginning to take form and the excitement grows day by day. Last December, we had promised each other that music would be a big part of our shared experiences in 2024, and so we began to really study the releases and schedules of our favorite bands.
So far, I’ve been lucky in that the music she likes isn’t - how can I put this diplomatically - popular? Yet. And it’s not like she isn’t surrounded by Swifties at school, she just hasn’t latched on to any music, yet, that would cost me an arm and a leg to see with her.
So far, we have bunch of concerts booked: Plush and Sorrowfuse in June, Studio Two in August and Thunderstruck in December. We have meet and greet and/or VIP performances scheduled for all of those! The kid is under the impression that all bands will meet with her, and I haven’t yet the heart to tell her that even her dad’s reporter-ability to swing actual live meetings will eventually meet its match, but we haven’t yet!
We’re still patiently waiting for her actual favorite group, The Warning, to announce tour dates close to us in the fall.
In other music related projects, Little Bean finished her questions for the Canadian teen band, Freeze the Fall, whom she’s been a pen-pal with and the kids are going to answer the questions and get back to us. Then I’ll edit the interview into a story which Little Bean will publish here in time for the band’s big EP release later next week.
On top of all that, she’s still taking recorder and piano lessons so music will continue to play a role in her life, I hope, for the foreseeable future.
Music can be like learning another language, one that’s emotional and feels rather than states. I can’t imagine my life without it, and I’m glad she’s been experiencing some of that same intensity. We’ll carry on.
And if she suddenly wants to go see Beyonce, well, I’ll just have to find a way.
Tell us, what music moved you as a child? What music moves you today?
Always been a fan of brass in a rock band so Chicago/Blood Sweat & Tears a big influence early on.
I enjoy all types of music (except Opera). The Beatles were my influencer. I was 13 when Please Please Me came out. And then they and I grew with the times - Rubber Soul, Sg Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour., White Album. to name a few. And, yes, I had all the cards (wish I still had them)
