Down east, a stone’s throw from Maine and tucked neatly into the Upper Narrows of the Cocheco River rests Dover, the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire and the seventh oldest in the United States.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were born in Dover. And one time, a Hallmark Channel movie called Christmas Incorporated was set in Dover.
But I’d argue the most important thing happening in Dover is a ten-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Mozy and his human companion Jeff Bernstein.
The two call themselves Mozy & Me and their goal is to, well, it’s hard to explain exactly what Mozy and Jeff do. Basically, they walk around town, visit places, make people smile and then make little videos of their visits. Those videos are then promoted on social media. And if Mozy and Jeff like the establishment, they offer their green check mark “Approved by Mozy & Me” stamp of approval
I met Mozy and Jeff the other day and got a chance to give Mozy and nice scratch behind the ears.
Jeff told me that he and Mozy are committed to one message which they try to spread around Dover. “Don’t wait for people to be friendly,” Jeff told me. “Show them how.”
That message is now beginning to appear on stickers and t-shirts as well. In fact, Mozy and Jeff are gearing up for a big fundraiser this weekend. The plan is to sell shirts and give 100% of profits to a Dover 5013c non profit called the New Hampshire Coalition for the Support of Service Dogs. That’s what these two do. Make folks smile, promote local business and raise money for good causes.
I’ll attach links to Mozy & Me’s social media and drop a QR code for the fundraiser below.
Kindness breeds kindness folks. We each have authority over our own space. Mozy and Jeff have claimed Dover as their circle of smiles. What space will be yours?
Learn more about Mozy & Me. To reach out to Jeff and learn about their appearances or how to pick up swag, you can contact him at mozyandme@gmail.com. Jeff also has a Facebook page (Jeff Bernstein) and can often be found posting to various Dover community pages. Below is Jeff’s Venmo DR code where you can pick up a t-shirt. We could all use a little bit of Mozy in our lives.
Housekeeping: I hope you’ve all be enjoying this Day By Day run! Today’s essay makes it 36 days in a row of my attempts to offer some short, funny, weird insight into your mornings. So far so good. And a big hello to all our new subscribers, of which there has been a big increase in the last week or so - I appreciate you all coming on board. My whole archive, all 140+ essays, is available for free if you’d like to browse.
If you like what you see here, do share and annoy your friends about us. Most of my long form, daily writing happens here now, though feel free to check out my bookstore or website, you know the drill!
Finally, to everyone who continues to turn me into a jittery mess of caffeine by buying me so many cups of coffee, I thank you from the bottom of my hypertension! There’s no cost or even any real attempt to make money off this daily journal so the fact that you all do, actually, throw java funds in my direction means a lot. If nothing else it means you want me to stay awake! Buy me a coffee at this link.
So, on we go. I have no idea what I’m going to write about tomorrow. Any ideas?
I'd love to read about some of your family's holiday/winter/Christmas traditions, if you're comfortable with sharing. Everybody marks this time of year differently, which I find interesting.
Yeah for Jeff and Mozy!! ❤️
