Some sad news from my publishing world. My primary publishing house, Hobblebush Books, has announced they’ll be shutting down operations at the end of 2024.
It’s tough to be a publisher these days. For ten years and seven books - including mine and Little Bean’s rock guides - I’ve been a proud author under the watchful eye of first the amazing poet Sid Hall and then the talented editor-in-chief Kirsty Walker.
They’ve always been a small press, and times change. I have nothing but good things to say about my time there, and have been grateful for the opportunity to build my career and audience there.
Two of my books through Hobblebush - The White Mountain and The Nepal Chronicles - won state wide awards and Sid and Kirsty over the years have allowed me a great deal of flexibility to try new things and be involved as an author in ways that wouldn’t have been possible in larger publishing houses.
So, going forward, where does this leave me? And you, my dear readers.
Well, in the immediate future - like the first half of 2025 or so, nothing much will change. The rights to all the books, along with the digital documentation and templates will all revert back to me. All the inventory Hobblebush currently has will also come to me so that will ensure I have stock for readers for probably six or seven months. And my personal digital bookstore will remain open and become my primary sales location. You can check that out here: Dan’s Bookstore.
Meantime, as I’m now an author in the corral of Falcon Books, nothing changes for the release of the NYS Fire Tower Guide, which has a release date of August 5th. I suspect as we get closer to that, I’ll be announcing a few signings and reading for that.
And then, for the old books, I’ll slowly either begin shopping them around again, or begin the process of self-publishing them as needed through Amazon or wherever. I’m not going to worry about that quite yet.
Which is a long way of saying, this isn’t an end, but rather I’ll just have to figure out a new way of doing it. All of your support here - yes in donations of course, but also just as readers who stick around and share this journal - is so important to us. And we have a ton of great things planned for you in 2025, including a new monthly feature called Uma Interviews and a more regular Notes From The Library column.
So, keep reading and we’ll keep writing and we’ll be fine! See ya tomorrow!
I’m very sorry to hear that Hobblebooks is shutting down. Sign of the times, I suppose.
Damn.
