Today and tomorrow, follow ups that we’ve been asked about.
Tomorrow, we’ll check in on thru-hiker David Graves.
But first, the boulder in our back yard!
A curious thing happens when writing for a daily publication; which is, you never actually know what post will resonate and create lots of interest and which will fall flat. Last week, I wrote a deeply researched, meticulously worded history and background story about the Lazarus Lizards of Cincinnati. You all went… meh!
The next day, however, a toss away story about a boulder in our yard received the highest amount of activity and comments all month! So, we get it! Boulders, cool! Lizards, bleh!
You told us stories about your own boulders, even sent us pictures! Here’s one from Kathleen Willette of a beauty in her yard. (Dolly for size.) She’s a nice one!
Ours isn’t that huge, but we wanted to let you know that phase two of our boulder extraction project took place this week, as several burly neighbors and a whole gaggle of kids came over to attempt to pull it out. No luck! We DID manage to basically fully uncover it, and even budged it a bit. One fellow estimated it to be 400-500 pounds.
So, they managed to make it wobble. It’s entirely uncovered so we know what we’re dealing with. And, bonus, no toes or fingers have yet been squished in this process.
So now we bring in the big guns. Through work, I know a guy who does landscaping and extraction work. He’s going to send a couple guys over next week with rebars. The plan will be to just get it out of the hole, and there it will stay, a permanent part of our garden.
“Make sure it’s we can play on it and sit on it,” says Little Bean.
That’s it, that’s the key. A big old boulder that becomes part of the family. We can’t wait! Stay tuned!
Don’t forget everyone, that our raffle to win Uma’s fire tower painting is still ongoing! The raffle is a collaboration with NH Audubon, an organization that’s played a big role in Uma’s life. She’s attended Audubon summer camp at NH Audubon Massabesic Center in Auburn for many summers now and it’s helped mold her outlook on nature and the outdoors. Yard boulders are fun!
Had one about that size, dug a deeper hole along side and rolled it into that...problem gone!
