Here’s what you all need to do for this always strange, disconcerting week between Christmas and New Year.
Nothing. Do nothing.
Listen, I’m not talking about your everyday obligations. We still have to work. The garbage needs to be taken out. Little Bean has a basketball game on Saturday. Dinner still has to be cooked. That’s not what we’re talking about here.
To all you creatives - put down the pen. Don’t write, just read. Don’t compose, just listen. Don’t practice, just noodle.
To all you DIYers - let it be. Don’t sketch it out. Don’t talk it through. It’ll be there in 2025.
To all you hobbyists - the yarn won’t collect dust. The plants will be fine. You don’t need a new loaf of bread.
You have permission to do nothing. We’re giving you our blessing and approval.

Trust me, I know this is hard and heck, I’m going to break my own rules because I’ll need to write something for you all for the next few days. But if you read all that and think to yourself, “Oh no, what will I do with myself,” well, I guess I’d argue that you for sure - you of all people - need a little break.
It’s like five days. Give it a rest. Give all of it a rest. Ok, give as much as you can a rest.
Get back to it in the new year. One of two things will happen. Either you’ll feel re-energized and recharged, or you’ll feel so backed up and pent up that you’ll need to spill it all out at once. Either way, plenty of renewed and rested energy to tap into on Jan. 2.
Sound good? Great! Take a break. You earned it!
One day of doing nothing for an entire day yesterday has set me up to resume my regular work/writing schedule.
Like that attitude! Happy New Year, Dan!
