We’re late for school, or getting really close anyway. But she’s determined.
We received a package from her favorite Canadian band, Freeze the Fall, the other day and sitting in her school parking lot in the morning before the bell goes off has been her only chance to open it.
Needless-to-say, the treasures it contains are invaluable. A band shirt for me, which we’ll wear to represent FTF at our The Warning show in Atlanta next week. And for Little Bean, the band’s number 1 kid fan, a handful of temp tattoos, a logo charm and, most important of all, two logo patches to sew on to her battle vest.
She wanted to record a little video of her opening the box, which she did, but then she had an idea - she suggested we open a stand, like a lemonade stand, only instead of lemonade, we’d sell merch right out on the street for Freeze the Fall and Lovebites. (She loves Lovebites as well.) She had a reason why those two bands and not The Warning.
“Because if we get their stuff out there, then people around here would know them and then the bands would come and play here,” she reasoned.
“So we can go see them, you mean,” I said.
“Yes!”
Kid’s always looking to advance her goals, I have to admit. But her idea did play into something else I’ve been thinking about, which was that this music hobby was beginning to absorb more and more of our time and attention. And not just bands and shows. But her own musical schooling. Chorus. Starting to write songs. Wanting a group of her friends to form a band.
Like rocks, it appears that this might be sticking.
So, I made a counter offer. If we want to let people know about our hobby and keep a record for ourselves, how about we dedicate a YouTube channel to that. Nothing fancy or professional. We wouldn’t monetize it. We’d be strict about comments and privacy. Little snippets of music-related videos and vlogs. We’d work on them together. Keep it casual and in between other priorities. But that way we’d have an outlet for that and maybe introduce those bands to other people at the same time.
We’d call it Dispatches From the Rail - the front row, in other words. And so that’s what we’ll do. I created a channel for us. We’ll put up little videos here and there. Maybe even interviews if she keeps up with the interest. Maybe we’ll even drop audio snippets or even full songs if she keeps writing them and wants to. We’ve never had a theme-specific platform, but maybe it’s time. Who knows. It could go nowhere. We could get bored of it. Nobody could sign up.
Let’s find out.
We’ll make our first post on Sunday, a short vlog of our trip to Boston meeting Holy Wars and The Warning. But before that, we thought we’d put this out there as a way of building a little subscriber base before we launch. Are you interested? Give us a try and let’s see if we can make this fun together.
Here’s the link. Horns in the air. Let’s go! DISPATCHES FROM THE RAIL
