I’m on my evening walk with Pip when up ahead, a tiny, furry blob jumps onto the sidewalk and runs straight at us.
Normally, Pip would go insane should such a thing happen, but I think he was as surprised as I was. We both just froze. It was a tiny bunny. Not a new born but still young. Maybe 5-6 inches. Cotton ball tail.
I scooped up the pup and we waited, figuring the bunny was just passing by. Nope.
The little furry thing ran right up to me, and then shimmied its way up to the toe of my shoe and there it sat. I slid back a foot and he moved forward into the same position.
Even Pip was like, “Uh, what’s the deal here, dad?”
What are one’s options when faced with a tiny bunny on a city sidewalk? Do I take it home? The cat would surly make quick work of it. Do I move it into some nearby bushes? How do I move it? No gloves. Does it bite? Picking it up may be more than Pip could take, remember I’m already holding the dog. If I keep walking will it follow me?
The stand-off lasted maybe a minute. Finally, the bunny hopped off the sidewalk and skittered into a clump of bushes. Pip and I waited a few extra beats and then I put him back down. He sniffed around a bit then looked up at me and I swear he looked perplexed.
We moved on. Hope the little fella made it home safely. The things you see while walking the dog!
Cute story, love the way you turned simple walk encounter into a psychology statement.
First - that picture is disturbing - LOL. Second - we never had rabbits here in Raymond. Two years ago they appeared (Eastern Cotton Tail - not the endangered New England Cotton Tail). Well now they are destroying our flowers and garden. Fences and cinnamon help.
