Before I knew it, Little Bean had gathered a fourth grader army to help us move books, and suddenly there we were, marching through her school, a tiny regiment of book toting Sherpas. I began to wonder if I had enough room in my car.
A few weeks ago, my daughter came home from school with a request - her fourth grade teacher was retiring at the end of the school year. Could we take all her classroom books and donate them to my library’s annual book sale? That would help her teacher, make certain the books got a good home, and proceeds would go to a great cause.
Of course, I said.
What never occurred to me is that a retiring fourth grade teacher would have THAT MANY books! Crates and crates. A whole career library worth. An incredible find for our book sale and we were so grateful to her teacher for entrusting us with her precious collection.
So, I began the process of taking a crate or two with me when I dropped Little Bean off at school in the morning. On the first day, it was just me and my daughter. Then, on the second day, she volunteered her friend. Then, two or three friends.
Then word got out.
A couple days ago, we walked into class, and every student raised their hand to volunteer. Every. One.
Little Bean quickly corralled them into a porter line, each of the kids grabbed a crate, and back out to the car we went. As we walked out through the halls, passing kids jumped in line, or ran to the class to grab another crate. Soon, Little Bean was leading about 15 kids down the halls and out the doors to the car.
I felt like we should sing the “Whistle While You Work” song from Snow White.
In all, on just that one day, we packed nearly 600 children’s books into my car. The kids did great. Little Bean was a perfect organizer.
But now something else happened. Word started getting out. Apparently, my brown nosing daughter began mentioning the success of our donation event to other teachers around the school.
This morning as I dropped her off, several other teachers asked if I was taking donations. Looks like we’re gonna need to gather the little troops again and get the book line moving! I’m sure Little Bean will lead the way!
By the way, mark your calendar for our big book sale dates, July 26 and July 27. The book sale takes place at Auburn Village School at 11 Eaton Hill Road. Tens of thousands of books, cds, games, puzzles, dvds and vinyl. You MUST come!
That was so fantastic! Little Bean you are a star! A grade of A+ goes to the teachers and all the children that helped out! Best of luck with the sale!!
Love it!!!
