Just a few words today as I begin the second phase of research and hiking for the upcoming Falcon Guides Fire Towers of NY book. Over the next few months, most of my free time will be spent criss-crossing western and upstate New York to tag the few remaining hikes and get all my gps and hiking coordinates settled.
This is a different style of writing for me, more technical, demanding more certainty. And also math!
Anyway, we began Saturday with a monster tower, 102 steps, 82 feet tall and without a roof!
Views from the Nimham Fire Tower in Kent promise views of New York City on a clear day, but alas the day wasn’t clear enough.
And besides, urban myth has it that the mountain was visited my aliens who used the strange stone vaults along the trail for nefarious purposes! That’s a better story anyway!
So, on we go. As always, I couldn’t do any of this without you all.
Keep hiking. Keep going. Be kind!
I know where you are --- I used to live across the Hudson from this area as a child. Fire towers are WAY too scary for me to climb! They are too open. I didn't even make it all the way up the Abenaki Tower in Tuftonboro! Congrats to you for doing all of these.
